Theodore Bikel (pictured above) Award for Excellence in Theatre and Performance to: Joey and Faith Soloway of Transparent the television series and Transparent: The Musical. Award presented by Aimee Ginsburg Bikel and David Chack at the Annoyance Theatre in Chicago! Also, Honoring Alex Edelman presented by Jenny Gersten.

The Theodore Bikel Award for Excellence in Theatre honors the great theatre actor, folk/ethnic musician, film star, and larger than life figure Theodore Bikel. But to us, at the Alliance for Jewish Theatre (AJT), where he was on the AJT Board, he was just Theo. Known for his Academy Award nominated performance in the "Defiant Ones"; for originating the role of Captain Von Trapp in the Broadway "Sound of Music", when the song Eidelweiss was written for his powerfully emotional voice; for being a founder of the Newport Folk Festival with Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and Judy Collins; for being a leader in Civil Rights laying his life on the line to go to the protests in the South and teaming with Lorraine Hansbury, Harry Belafonte and others; and for so much more - he liked to just be known as a mensch. He continued to enthrall us throughout his vast career, and we are so proud to honor him and to pay tribute to his wife Aimee Ginsburg Bikel, director of the Theodore Bikel Legacy Project, in presenting this distinguished award to the Soloway Siblings. Presenting the Award to Alex Edelman is Broadway Producer Jenny Gersten.
