Carey Perloff

Carey Perloff was Artistic Director of American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco from 1992-2018, and the Classic Stage Company in New York from 1988- 1992. At A.C.T., Perloff staged eleven Stoppard plays (including two American premieres), dozens of classics and many new works and world premieres. Recent directing includes: PALE SISTER by Colm Toibin (Gate Theater, Dublin), GHOSTS with David Strathairn and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (Seattle Rep) and with Uma Thurman (Williamstown), Martyna Majok’s QUEENS (La Jolla Playhouse), PRIVATE LIVES (Stratford Shakespeare Festival), A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS (Arena State, Old Globe, Seattle Rep, A.C.T., Theatre Calgary, Arts Club Vancouver, Craig Noel Award for Best Director), MERCHANT OF VENICE (Shakespeare Company, Calgary) starring Seana McKenna. Upcoming: THE OEDIPUS TRILOGY starring John Douglas Thompson at Seattle Rep. As a playwright, Perloff’s work includes EDGARDO OR WHITE FIRE (WTF commission, Workshop at Peoples Light in April 2023), IF GOD WERE BLUE (developed by New York Stage and Film 2021, workshopped at the Roundabout 2022, Vivienne Benesch, director), KINSHIP (Williamstown Theater Festival 2017, starring Cynthia Nixon and directed by Jo Bonney, Theatre de Paris starring and directed by Isabelle Adjani, developed at NYS&F and ACT), HIGHER (winner, Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation Best Original Script, LJP DNA Festival 2016, directed by Chris Ashley, A.C.T. 2017, directed by Mark Rucker), LUMINESCENCE DATING (Sloan Foundation commission, produced at EST, NY and Magic Theater SF, directed by Mark Rucker, SF Critics Award Best Original Work), THE FIT (developed at NYS&F and WTF, premiered at San Francisco Playhouse, directed by Bill English 2019).
