“Susan and Her Daughters: A Modern Fiddler,” by Beth Harpaz, is a finalist for the Thomas Barbour Playwrights Award. The script will get its first staged reading June 4, at 7 PM, at 1 E. 29th St., Manhattan. DESCRIPTION: Susan, a columnist for the legendary Bintel Brief Jewish advice column, is overwhelmed by letters about the Israel-Gaza war. Then her own family starts reeling: One daughter is a pro-Palestine activist, one is a Zionist, one moves to a Muslim country. Susan seeks guidance from the ushpizin (Biblical patriarchs) during Sukkot, but instead she is haunted by the ghost of Ab Cahan, founding editor of the Forward — and by the legacy of her late husband, who left Israel as a young man and never returned.
