Alice Eve Cohen is a playwright, solo theatre artist, author, and educator. Her plays and solo works have been presented for over 200,000 people on 4 continents. She won the 2021 National Jewish Playwriting Contest for OKLAHOMA SAMOVAR, presented in 2022 by Jewish Plays Project in NYC and by the Jewish Theatre of Oklahoma, in Oklahoma City. IN THE CERVIX OF OTHERS, winner of the 2019 Jane Chambers Feminist Playwriting Award, is a 2022 Ashland New Play Festival finalist and official selection of the International Women Playwrights Conference 2022. Her solo play WHAT I THOUGHT I KNEW, adapted from her first memoir, has been produced nationally, at theatres including Six Stars Theatre (St. Paul), Jewish Repertory Theatre of Western NY (Buffalo), Interplay Theatre (Cleveland), Kitchen Theatre (Ithaca), and All for One Theatre (NYC). THE YEAR MY MOTHER CAME BACK, adapted from her second memoir, will be produced in February 2023 by Bema Productions in Victoria, Canada. Her new play, HOTEL LIMBO, has been selected for development by the Orchard Project’s Audio Lab.

Cohen’s memoirs, published by Viking and Algonquin, are honored with the Elle Magazine Literary Grand Prix for Nonfiction, Oprah magazine’s 25 Best Books of Summer, and Salon’s Best Books of the Year. A collection of her solo plays was published by NoPassport Press. Her monologues are featured in The Best Men’s Stage Monologues 2022; The Best Women’s Stage Monologues 2022, Smith & Kraus; Best Monologues for Women 2020, Applause Books; She Persisted: 100 Monologues by Women Over 40, Applause Books 2021. Her essays have been published in The New York Times, American Theatre magazine, USA Today, Huffington Post, Parent Magazine, and other publications. She written television for Nickelodeon, CTW, and CBS, and her memoir has been optioned for a television movie.

Her plays have been produced and/or developed at venues including: The Kitchen Theatre, The Orchard Project, Jewish Plays Project, The New Georges, Six Points Theatre, JRT of Western NY, Interplay Theatre, Jewish Theatre of Oklahoma, New York Theatre Workshop, Here Arts Center, 78th Street Theatre Lab, DTW, All for One Festival, Cherry Lane Theater, Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, The Women’s Project, Philadelphia Women’s Theatre Festival, LA Women’s Theatre Festival, Barnard College, University of Michigan; Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Galway Theatre Festival, Jerusalem’s Theatre Bama, Trinidad’s Astor Theatre, Oslo Theatre Festival, and many more.

A recipient of fellowships and awards from NYSCA, NEA, VCCA, Voice & Vision, Poets & Writers, Meet the Composer, and an Emmy Award Special Commendation, she is a 2-time O’Neill National Playwriting Conference finalist and a 5-time Broadway World Award nominee.

Cohen has an MFA from The New School and a BA cum laude from Princeton University. She teaches at The New School, where she received the University’s 2020 Distinguished Teaching Award. She is on the MFA faculty of Augsburg University’s MFA Program in Creative Writing and has been a guest artist and teacher at University of Michigan, University of Arizona, Fordham University, and Columbia Teachers College. Alice has two daughters and lives with her husband in New York City.
